LEGISLATIVE ALERT #08-01
March 12, 2008
The Issue: Retirement credit for
reserve component members under Sec. 647 of the FY08 NDAA
retroactive to 9-11-2001
Immediate Action Required:
Contact your Members of Congress and urge them to support H.R.
4930 - National Guardsman and Reservist Parity for Patriots Act,
which would provide 3 months early retirement credit for every
90 days in support of contingency operations or stateside
emergency response during a fiscal year retroactive to
9-11-2001.
The National Guard and Reserves have transformed from a
strategic reserve to an operational force and are serving our
country in unprecedented numbers to prosecute the Global War on
Terror or respond to natural disasters such as Hurricane
Katrina. Sec. 647 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization
Act (NDAA) reduces the age at which reserve component members
may receive their retirement pay by 3 months for each 90 days of
contingency operations or stateside emergency response duty
during a fiscal year.
While the original legislation would have made this law
retroactive to 9-11-2001, as this initiative made its way
through the conference, it was altered in favor of an effective
date of the passage of the FY 2008 NDAA.
NGAUS believes members of the reserve component, who have
sacrificed and so honorably served our country during this
period, have earned these retirement credits retroactive to
9-11-2001.
Contact your members of Congress and urge them to support and
pass H.R. 4930 now, and send a clear message to our troops that
their service and sacrifice is appreciated.
