The 2011 National Guard Marathon Time Trials were held in Lincoln, Neb., May 1 and the Pennsylvania National Guard had many notable successes.
The Pennsylvania National Guard marathon team is made up of Lt. Toby Angove, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Mei Gentry, Staff Sgt. Troy Harrison, Staff Sgt. Matthew Stern, Sgt. Daniel Kysela, Sgt. Mark Jones, Spc. Evan Minor and Airman 1st Class Emily Shertzer.
The team came in second in the nation among all the National Guard Teams. Airman 1st Class Emily Shertzer placed as the second female overall and the first National Guard female competitor.
In the male ages 25-29 category four members of the team placed to include Sgt. Dan Kysela, 5th place; Spc Evan Minor, 4th place; Staff Sgt. Mathew Stern, 3rd place and Sgt. Mark Jones taking 2nd.
Lt. Toby Angove took 1st place in the males 35-39 category and Chief Warrant 3 Mei Van Gentry took 2nd place for the females 40-45. Staff Sgt. Troy Harrison also placed 7th overall at the Lincoln Half Marathon.
All eight of the Pennsylvania National Guard marathon team runners qualified for the elite All-Guard Marathon Team. These are the top 40 males, 15 females, and 2 masters (over 50) males in the National Guard.
Pennsylvania runners make up 13.8 percent of the All-Guard team. Last year Pennsylvania only had two runners on the All-Guard team with Kysela and Stern returning again this year.
